Phoenix

A wounded bird,
With an aching heart,
Calls into the night.
The late winter sky,
Moans in reply,
“Your wings are too weak for the flight.”

The glowing moon,
With a contemptible glare,
Dared the bird to try.
Talons stretching,
Will – Unflinching.
He mustered the courage to fly.

The battered red bird,
Steadily soared through the sky,
Dancing to the moon’s cruel song.
The phoenix approaching,
The moon encroaching,
Far from where it belongs

A terrible burst of fire,
The sun presented its wrath.
Flames engulfing,
Terror resulting,
The eclipse devoured all in its path.

The vibrant sun,
Overcame the silver moon,
And devastated the courageous bird.
From head to foot,
Reduced to ash and soot,
The bird’s song could no longer be heard.

Warmth,
Like a dream,
Wafted over him.
Phoenix emerging,
Spring burgeoning,
Winter’s light has grown dim.

Spring’s arrival,
The annual rebirth,
Showers us with calm.
Nature awakening,
Sun rejuvenating,
The Phoenix rises with the dawn.

Hunger Games – Cease and Desist to Harry Potter Alliance Charity

In a move that could only happen in Hollywood – even as the world appears to be crumbling down around us all – Lionsgate’s senior vice president for business affairs and litigation, Liat Cohen, has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Harry Potter Alliance’s Image Better Project because the group is running a charity campaign titled “Hunger is Not a Game.” Cohen asserts that the group is “piggybacking off” the marketing for the Hunger Games movie marketing. Cohen further noted that his group was bothered by the “distortion” of the title of the new film.

With all the hype and marketing surrounding the movie, it is perhaps understandable that Lionsgate would want to ensure their “brand,” if you will. But, again, it’s all a bunch of Hollywood silliness when it really is considered carefully. The letter from Cohen notes, “This is causing damage to Lionsgate and our marketing efforts. We have the ability to take down your sites as a violation of our trademark and other intellectual property laws. We hope that will not be necessary as this is too serious a subject.”

What is a serious subject is the devaluation of the U.S. dollar, high unemployment, the U.S. federal debt and a pending war with Iran. The tiff between fat, greedy Hollywood execs is simply the type of thing that the sheep-like people of America like to pay attention to. But, we digress. In someone’s view, this stuff actually is important. More power to them. It remains to be seen if the Potter group’s charity will comply with the letter.

Is Test Tube Meat Safe?

With the growing demand for meat, scientists the world over are now looking at developing different options, and test tube meat or in vitro meat happens to be one of them. Simply put, it is meat created in a laboratory. As with any laboratory-derived product, people are bound to be apprehensive about it. As the concept is not fully developed yet, several questions can be raised about its viability. However, it would not be justified to toss it aside just because it doesn’t feel right or sound right.

In vitro meat is not to be confused with imitation meat, which is created from vegetable protein, and is given a “meat-like” taste. Unlike imitation meat, test tube meat is derived from animal stem cells. The meat-eating community, however, is divided over the safety aspect of consuming this type of cultured meat. This brings us to the question – is test tube meat safe enough to eat? We need to understand the creation process to find the answer to this question.

Developing Test Tube Meat

Consumable meat is nothing but animal muscle. The method being employed currently involves extracting stem cells from animal muscles and treating them with protein, which converts these cells into fleshy parts. These loose or structured muscle cells have fibers with multiple nuclei. These muscle cells are then placed under stimulation which makes them fuse. Then comes the part where the meat is stretched by mimicking the exercise motion, which actually “develops” the muscle. The muscle fibers thus obtained are then minced to make your regular pound of flesh.

This is an absolutely elementary explanation to what is an exceedingly complicated process. By complications, I’m not referring to the ethical side right now, but it is the entire conversion process of the stem cell into a fully grown piece of meat, is what the scientists are grappling with at the moment.

Safety Aspects of Test Tube Meat

▣ Test tube meat is primarily seen as a healthier option. As a lab-created product, it is possible for scientists to diminish its fat content. Along with that, it may be possible to inject it with omega-3 fatty acids to enable consumers to benefit from it.

▣ As it will be created in a closed environment, test tube meat is expected to be free of harmful chemicals and infected animals. With the reduction in cattle farming, we can expect a dip in the occurrence of mad cow disease, avian and swine flu and salmonella contamination.

▣ Environmentalists do have their concerns, but overall, it does seem that creating in vitro meat won’t inflict large-scale damage to our planet. Its production is expected to curb costs as the resources required are lesser as compared to traditional meat. Lower greenhouse gas emission is another advantage.

▣ Animal welfare organizations are applauding the efforts taken to produce in vitro meat. As the process is conducted with stem cells, it does not involve any type of torture, which is usually the trademark of certain slaughter houses indulging in unethical cattle farming.

Concerns Regarding Test Tube Meat

▣ In vitro meat is considered genetically modified. This does not spell disaster straightaway, but in the opinion of some experts, changes in its DNA pattern could make it carcinogenic.

▣ The taste and texture of the meat is something that is under the scientists’ scanner. This variety of meat can possibly fall short of any finicky meat eater’s expectation.

▣ From the ethical point of view, when you recreate a natural procedure in a laboratory, one can question the extent that science can go to, and its implication on our future generations.

In vitro or test tube meat cannot be considered a distant dream anymore, with scientists expecting to put a test tube burger on our plates by the end of 2012. It would certainly be interesting to note how people receive it. With scientists heralding it as a welcome solution to our planet’s food crisis, we cannot afford to completely ignore the skeptics too. Whether or not test tube meat proves itself to be a boon or a bane, remains to be seen.

7 Easy Ways to Save Money on Groceries

We all have to eat and groceries aren’t getting any cheaper. We either have to eat less or figure out how to spend less, and since I enjoy eating I chose to find ways to save money on groceries without sacrificing quantity or quality. These 7 easy ways to save money on groceries can help you eat well while spending less too.

Be Unfaithful

To your favorite grocery store by shopping at the store which offers you the best prices. Scour the weekly food ads, compare prices and make a list of what is on sale at each area store, then store hop and save money. Don’t forget about non-traditional food stores like dollar stores and drug stores which often have the lowest prices on particular items.

Forget Warehouse Clubs

Buying food in bulk at warehouse clubs only makes ‘cents’ for the minority of regular shoppers or for special occasion shopping. Forget about doing the weekly grocery shopping at warehouse clubs and opt to shop at grocery stores, where sale prices combined with coupons beat warehouse club prices. Also an impulse buy at a grocery store may only cost you a couple of bucks where as an impulse buy at a warehouse club could take a $ 20 bite out of the budget.

Speaking of Coupons…

Don’t purchase an item simply because you have a cents off coupon for it. Clip coupons (swap unwanted ones with friends) and use money saving coupons on items you plan to purchase. Combining coupons with sale prices yields double savings, another reason to scour the weekly food ads.

Stock Up and Save

Go grocery shopping once a week (or once a month) and you’ll avoid impulse buying, plus you’ll save time and gas. Stock up on sale priced items and plan weekly menus around food items that are on sale.

Get a Freezer

A small deep freezer will help you save money on groceries by allowing you to buy large quantities of sale priced frozen foods and stocking them in the freezer. When prices are high, you’ll still be feeding your family on the cheap. Make ahead dinners and meats can also be stored in t he freezer, saving both money and time.

Save on Lunch Meat

If your family consumes a lot of lunch meat, skip the meat counter that displays prepackaged lunch meat and head for the deli counter. Prepackaged lunch meats cost between $ 4-$ 8 per pound while deli counter lunch meats, sliced fresh, cost less than $ 2 per pound. Buy extra when deli meat is on sale and store the meat in the deep freeze.

Sandwich Bread Savings

Check out your local bread outlet for savings on sandwich bread, rolls and pastries. Three loaves of bread can usually be purchased at a bread outlet store for the price of one loaf of bread at a grocery store.

Features that Birds Share with Reptiles

We all are aware that reptiles and birds are a part of the animal kingdom. But many of us are not familiar with the theory which states that birds evolved from reptiles, leading them to share quite a few features. Believed to be descendents of the dinosaurs, there are several characteristics which are common to both, birds and reptiles. It was in 1868, that biologist Thomas Huxley came up with the theory that established a link between modern-day avian creatures and dinosaurs. This sparked off a new line of thought among paleontologists, as an analysis of certain fossils lent credence to Huxley’s theory. He conducted a study on the skeletal structure of a theropod dinosaur, the Compsognathus, and the Archaeopteryx lithographica, which was the earliest specimen of a bird. He managed to show that the Archaeopteryx had quite a few features in common with the Compsognathus, the most significant being the presence of feathers.

As with all discoveries, this theory has its fair share of counterattacks. There are scientists who are of the view that birds have evolved from archosaurs, a group of diapsid amniotes, whose present day descendents include crocodiles. Similarities between birds and reptiles are the result of convergent evolution, wherein different organisms evolve similar anatomical structures on their own. However, with the discovery of feathered theropod fossils, the acceptance tilted in favor of Huxley’s theory of theropods being the ancestry of birds. The similarities mentioned here are in accordance with this theory.

Similarities Between Birds and Reptiles

Feature Birds Reptiles Verdict
Oviparous Birds, as we all know, lay eggs outside their body. The cloaca orifice, which performs dual duties of excretion and reproduction, are present in both. Reptiles are oviparous too. In fact, the amniotic egg shells are common to both species. Exception!
Egg shells of birds are quite hard, whereas those of reptiles are leathery to touch.
Scales Though a bird’s body is covered with feathers, they have scales on their legs and feet. Their beaks and claws have scales too. Scales in reptiles perform various functions that are vital to their survival. The scales in both, birds and reptiles are made of beta-keratin, that make them significantly tougher.
Skeletal Structure The single occipital condyle, which is at the base of the skull, joins the neck to the body and is present in reptiles as well. In case of birds, it allows them to rotate their necks as much as 270 degrees. The five fused bones that form the jaw and the single middle ear bone are also present in both. The nucleated blood cell structure is another shared feature. Exception!
As birds are airborne, their bones are hollow, therefore lighter, as against the bones of reptiles which are dense and heavy.
Ancestry Birds have evolved from theropod dinosaurs, during the Jurassic era. Birds are believed to be survivors of the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. They belong to: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Chordata. Theropod dinosaurs were reptiles with three-toed feet, they used to incubate their eggs, and had hollow bones. Reptiles belong to: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Chordata. The evidences indicating shared ancestry of birds and reptiles have been considerably conclusive.

Differences Between Birds and Reptiles

Feature Birds Reptiles
Heart A bird’s heart has four chambers. Reptiles have a three-chambered heart. The only exception is the crocodile, which is the reptile that has a four-chambered heart, similar to a bird’s. This feature stands in favor of the archosaurs’ theory.
Bones Hollow, pneumatic bones enable birds to fly. Reptiles, being land-dwellers, have heavy bones.
Mouth Birds have a light beak, with no teeth. The jaws of reptiles are very heavy, with the presence of teeth.
Metabolism The most significant difference is that birds are endothermic or warm-blooded. The food that they consume is converted to energy. Reptiles are ectothermic or cold-blooded. They need to absorb heat from an outside source.

Evolutionary biology is a diverse science that never fails to amaze us. As further evidences unearth more facts about reptiles, scientists will attempt to answer several questions about different organisms and how they came into being as they are today. Whether the mystery of bird evolution gets revealed or not needs to be seen.

MRSA Infection in Dogs

Does your dog keep licking a certain spot, making it look red and patchy and gross? Your furry friend may have a staph infection. There is only one way to diagnose a staph infection, though, and that is to take your dog to a veterinarian. If you suspect that your dog has a staph infection, you should bring it to the vet immediately for a check-up.

What is a staph infection?

Staph infections are one of the most common infections dogs can get. The bacteria on their skin naturally contains the Staphylococcus bacteria that can cause such an infection, and when they get a cut or scrape – as they are known to do – and lick it, they can easily transfer the bacteria into the cut and create a staph infection. Usually, it takes the form of a red rash that can spread and irritate your dog. Since the bacteria is naturally found on your dog’s skin, you cannot usually prevent it. Just keep an eye out for it and catch it early.

How do I know if my dog has a staph infection?

The first visible sign of a staph infection will probably be a red rash that your dog keeps licking. Other symptoms can include persistent itching, loss of appetite, fever, pain, and infections in other places such as the eyes, ears, or elsewhere on the skin. The best way to find out if your dog has a staph infection is to take it to the vet, who will draw blood and test the skin. Only your vet can diagnose a staph infection correctly and give you the prescription you need to treat it, so if you suspect your dog is infected, take a trip to the vet right away.

How do I treat a staph infection?

When we think of staph infections in humans, we often think of MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) or other, very harmful and persistent infections. This is not the case with dogs, however. Dogs get this skin irritation quite frequently, and so it is easily treatable. Your vet will probably give you an antibiotic to kill off some of the bacteria and speed up healing. The vet may also give you a topical cream to ease the skin irritation and make your dog more comfortable. Give the antibiotic as directed, and apply the skin cream as directed. When you put the cream on the skin, however, you may need to keep your dog from licking the area. You can do this with an Elizabethan collar, on an E-collar, that you attach around your dog’s neck and that protrudes over the snout to keep the dog from licking itself. You can also tie an old t-shirt around the area with the cream on it until it has been absorbed into the skin.

Are they dangerous? Contagious?

As stated before, if you catch it early, staph infections are usually not dangerous to dogs. However, as soon as you see signs or symptoms, take your dog to the vet because you don’t want it to get any worse. If it does get worse, it can be a serious problem, so don’t try to treat it yourself. Trust a trained professional. Staph infections are usually secondary to some type of allergy that your dog may have, and, therefore, are not contagious to humans. Because all dogs have the bacteria on their skin that causes staph infections, the infection itself is not usually contagious to other dogs, so if your puppy has a furry friend, it should be fine.

Best Dog Parks in Greenville, South Carolina

Whether you are looking for a good place to spend some quality time with man’s best friend or give your dog the opportunity to get the exercise he or she needs, a dog park is the place to go. Dog parks give your dog the chance to run free and socialize with other dogs in a safe environment. In my experience the best dog parks in Greenville, SC are Canine Corner at Cleveland Park and Falls Park on the Reedy each with their own pros and cons.

Canine Corner at Cleveland Park is located near downtown Greenville and provides the best variety of activities for you and your dog in the area. The park is free and allows you to set your dog loose in a fenced in area of about half an acre. This is a wonderful way for your dog to get a lot of exercise and socialize with other dogs without you having to watch them every second. The park is very clean and even provides you with doggie bags when needed. Another wonderful thing about Canine Corner is that it sits within the extensive Cleveland Park which has a wonderful walking trail for you and your four legged friend. This park offers a variety of different activities if you are looking to make a day of it. Some of these activities include: tennis, a large playground, the Greenville Zoo, soccer and softball fields, and pavilion/ cookout areas. Also in case of an emergency Cleveland Animal Hospital is right up the road. The park is in a good neighborhood, has plenty of activities and parking, and your canine will love it. The only downside is that though there are water fountains at the park they rarely work so be sure to bring water for your dog and yourself.

Falls Park on the Reedy is actually connected with Cleveland Park and is located in Downtown Greenville. It is in a wonderful neighborhood and is very beautiful. As the name would suggest the trails are beautiful and come complete with waterfalls. The park is very well kept and there is a large variety of scenery from open fields, waterfalls, the river, and wooded areas. One of the best things about this park is that it is only a few blocks walk down Main Street to the Barkery Bistro which is an amazing store for canines. Take your dog inside to pick out a homemade dog treat while you browse the large selection of pet clothing, food, and gifts. This area is very dog friendly and many stores have water bowls set outside for your pup and doggie bags are available along the street. The down side is that because the park is located in the city the park tends to be very crowded with a variety of people and their dogs therefore you should keep your dog on a leash. Also there is very little parking unless you are willing to pay for parking in a parking deck.

Over all these two parks are the best dog parks in the Greenville area as well as among the best I have seen throughout the country. Both parks give you the opportunity to spend time with your dog and give him or her exercise they need while still having a good time yourself. These parks provide a place for your dogs to get good exercise, socialize, and most important spend quality time with you.

How to Install Cedar Siding

Cedar is a gift from nature’s bounty and is known for its durability and heavy-duty performance. Known to be the best among the softwoods, it is widely used for making sturdy fences and fence posts; besides, it is also used as sidings in residential and commercial projects the world over.

Red cedar, when used as a siding, provides an attractive and durable finish to your home, while being highly resistant to weather and pests, thus offering you a low maintenance, high-end performance. Installing a cedar siding not only ups the aesthetic value of your home, it also aids to improve the property value.

Installing a Cedar Siding

With a clear goal in mind, we aim to not only help you with the installation process, but also give you guidelines, to help you with everything that is essential while installing the cedar siding for your home.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Installing a Cedar Siding Material to Keep Handy
✔ Inspect the material before you purchase the planks.
✔ Purchase only recognized grade material.
✔ Opt for cedar siding that is kiln dried.
✔ For durability, rely on thicker siding patterns.
✔ Perform quality check for proper finishing.
✔ Air the planks for a minimum period of 2 days before installing them.
✔ Apply a coat of primer and let it sit for a while.
▣ Chalk line
▣ Hammer
▣ Stable gun
▣ Siding nails
▣ Gauge finishing nails
▣ Flexible caulk
▣ Flashing
▣ Vapor barrier
▣ Cedar siding and trim

Steps to Install a Cedar Siding

Step 1: Pre-installation Care
To avoid the cedar from splitting or expanding during installation, you are advised to sun the cedar planks for a minimum of two days. Doing so, will assimilate the cedar to the local humidity, moisture and temperature. Before you begin, thoroughly check each plank and remember to coat each board with clear wood protector to protect it from any kind of damage. Install water-resistant barriers, which will channel moisture outside the house. The vapor barriers, as they are called, can be easily fixed to the exterior wall with a staple gun or washer-headed nails. Install vertical furring strips at equal distances before you install the siding over masonry covered exteriors.

Step 2: Install the Siding
Start with drawing a parallel chalk line to the ground or base foundation. Starting from the bottom, nail the first siding board into place. Drill the nails at the top edge of the siding in such a way that it will automatically get camouflaged by the next level of siding. Work from one end of the wall to the next end, thus, completing the siding in an entire row. Ensure that the boards are secured tightly together and there is no resulting gap between two boards. Once you reach the extreme corner, start the next level of siding from that corner and move towards the initial half of the wall. While placing the next row, ensure that the boards overlap by around 1.5 inches, thus covering the nails underneath. Follow the same procedure until the entire wall is covered. Patterns you can try include Bevel, Tongue and Groove, Channel, Board and Batten and Wavy Edge Bevel.

Cedar Specification Chart
Type Size Grade Moisture
Lap Siding 1 x 6″ Select knotty Green
Tongue and Groove 1 x 6″ Select Knotty Green
Board and Batten 1 x 3″ (board)
1 x 10″ (batten)
A & Better Kiln dried
Bevel 1/2 x 6″ Clear V.G. Heart Kiln dried

Step 3: Install the Flashing and Trim
Complete the siding by installing flashing on the top edge of the wall and the lower edges of the windows to channel water away from the siding. Install the trim with the finishing nails and apply caulk to the places where the siding meets the trim.

Step 4: Apply a Coat of Varnish
To give your siding a longer shelf life, coating it with water-repellent stain will act as a weatherproof sealer. While applying the primer, work your way downwards, allow it to dry and if required, give a second coat. For maximum heat reflection, you should use light-colored finish coats. You can even use oil-based paints to work as a protective shield.

Installing a wood siding is relatively an easier option; however, maintaining it is equally tougher compared to the other siding options. Utmost care must be taken to check for moss and lichen build up on the siding, and timely cleaning should be practiced. If you are skeptical of natural wood siding and are looking out for a long-term investment, then you can even consider the log look vinyl siding, which will give you a wood-like look, while being cheaper on your pocket.
